Nickel Creek Picture
Like many bands, the three southern Californians of Nickel Creek have their compelling levels of mystery. But sometimes they still get asked to describe their music. "When I meet someone on a plane, someone who sees the instrument and wants to know what I do," says mandolinist Chris Thile, "I always say, 'It's acoustic." Guitarist Sean Watkins extols the freedom a trio can provide. "Because we knew each other so well musically as well as personally, our songs can take different shapes live without too much thought -- and it's really nice to have three versatile instruments when we leave the page." Violinist Sara Watkins will sum things up. "We use a lot of detailed arrangements, but there is also room for improvisation.

I Should've Known Better Lyrics

Nickel Creek

Been a long time comin', and the cards were stacked.
It's been a long hard road to hell and back.
You were love meant trouble from the day we met.
You won every hand; I lost every bet.
Now you'd think that I should've known better.
Now you'd think that I would have seen it comin'
My heart sank, when I read that letter:
"Sank like a stone; sank like a stone."
Good cup of coffee yesterday's mail,
Bad love like this is always bound to fail.
Your love meant trouble from the day we met,
If you wanted your things, they're on the front step.
Now you'd think that I should've known better.
Now I think that I should have seen it comin'
An' my heart sank, when I read that letter:
"Sank like a stone; sank like a stone."
All alone in my kitchen, all alone in my head.
Some things you can't take back once they've been said.
Don't know what this love is for.
All I know is I don't want it anymore.
Now you'd think that I should've known better.
I, I should have seen it comin'
My heart sank, when I read that letter,
"Sank like a stone; sank like a stone."
